Habia 'The Skills Factor' competition

Twenty-one-year-old Bethany Barrett, who works as a Senior Stylist at Escape Hair and Therapy Salon in Bleadon and is studying for a Hair Apprenticeship in association with the Business Enterprise Centre, beat off stiff competition from other contestants from the South West at the regional heat of the contest in Bristol last Thursday (February 12).

˜The Skills Factor’ competition has been launched by Habia, the Government approved standards setting body for hair and beauty, to find the country’s best young hairdressers to join its Skills Team.

Tanita Veal, Work-based Learning Co-ordinator for Hair and Beauty at the Business Enterprise Centre, which is part of Weston College, said: "We are absolutely delighted Bethany has got to the next stage of this prestigious competition. She was the only person from the Bristol round to get through so we’re all very proud of her."

After getting through the Boot Camp round, Bethany will now attend one of two Habia Roadshows, which take place during National Apprenticeship Week, on either February 24 or 25.

At the workshop she will have to demonstrate her model on stage and give a briefing on how she achieved the look, using technical hairdressing terminology to detail her cut, colour and blow drying techniques. All winners will then be invited to train for a place in the Habia Skills Team.

Tanita added: "Bethany worked really hard in preparing for the contest with lots of help and support from her employers, Escape Hair and Therapy Salon and her tutors. She has so much passion, creativity and originality in hairdressing and I believe this won her the first place in the Bristol Boot Camp. She wants to go all the way to the top and make a difference in the hairdressing world.

"Bethany works as a Senior Stylist at Escape and the staff at the salon are always going on new cutting and colouring courses to keep up-to-date in the industry. We wish her the best of luck for the next round."

Habia is the standard setting body for the hair, beauty, nails and spa industries, and creates the standards that form the basis of all qualifications including NVQs, SVQs, Apprenticeships, Diplomas and Foundation degrees, as well as industry codes of practice.
